​RESIDENTIAL BUILDING CHANGE
January 3. 2022.  Please note the City of Willard no longer issues all the building permits it once did.   At this time, we only issue permits for additions, new structures, sheds, decks, porches, fences, drive ways, sidewalks, signs, swimming pools, demolition projects, waterlines, sewer lines, any work that take place in the right of way (roads, tree lawn, alleys), etc.  Contractors must be registered with the City prior to doing any work.  If you have any questions regarding this, please call us at the number to the left.
COMMERCIAL PERMITS
Huron County and the City of Willard have an agreement with SAFEBUILT to handle all commercial permitting and inspections for the City.  Below is their contact information and website:

Please keep in mind that Commercial Permits generally require Zoning approval from the City of Willard.  If you are building a new structure, CDC and Council will need to approve the project as well.  For timing consideration, CDC tends to meet on the 4th Tuesday of the month and plans have to be submitted 2 to 4 weeks before that.  Council generally meets on the first and third Monday of the Month.  Both entities need to approve the project before a Zoning Permit can be approved.

Contractors still need to be licensed with the City of Willard even though we don't issue Commercial Building Permits.

WHAT DO I NEED TO GIVE YOU?
Generally, at a minimum, a site plan that shows where a structure will be located compared to the property lines and other structures on the property.  This is so that we can ensure setbacks are met and structures are in the property location.  Often a visit to your property will be required to ensure everything is correct.  If you can show underground utilities, this will help expedite the process as well.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO GET A PERMIT?
The State requires us to turn around a permit within 30 days of receiving the application. The City's goal is to do the majority of permits within 3 days. Plan on 1 to 3 days for a basic permit and 3 to 30 days for a complex one.

HOW MUCH NOTICE DO I NEED TO GIVE FOR AN INSPECTION?
The state gives us 3 days to perform an inspection once we are notified. Our goal is to do an inspection within 24 hours. Please call the Code Enforcement and Zoning Department at least 24 hours in advance to schedule a zoning inspection.
