ABOUT
The Willard Maintenance Department strives to provide quality and excellence in our services to the community. This includes, but is not limited to, maintenance services to public streets and alleys, the water distribution system, the wastewater collection system, tree lawn trees, storm sewers, Greenwood Cemetery, and the Willard Municipal Airport. This department has a service garage to do repairs and services on city equipment and vehicles for all of the other departments. Building maintenance for City Hall and Parks and Recreation is also handled by the Maintenance Department
SOUTH MYRTLE AVENUE TREE PROJECT
In 2018, the Willard Tree Commission, appointed by City Council, began discussing tree replacement needs throughout the city. They concluded that the southern portion of Myrtle Avenue trees, located in the “boulevard”, needed to be replaced. The southern portion of Myrtle Avenue is often referred to as the gateway to our City, and with City Council’s blessing, the Tree Commission adopted the project to beautify the entrance. Working with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources arborist, Alan Siewert, who confirmed the need to replace the existing trees, and he suggested planting larger trees that would be trained into a natural canopy for the entrance. The Tree Commission quickly realized that the project was significant and likely would be costly, so it was decided this project would be split into phases. In the Fall of 2018, city forces removed the trees in the south block and began the process of preparing the soil for a planting in Spring of 2019. The trees were chipped and mixed into the soil providing the needed nutrients to prepare for a planting. Alan Siewert has suggested the planting of ‘Bloodgood’ London planetree Platanus x acerifolia ‘Bloodgood’. We will also begin this process again in the next block in the Fall of 2019 and plant a different species of tree. Please follow our website and Facebook for updates on this project. The Tree Commission currently has a vacancy for another member. The commission service is voluntary and interesting. If you are interested in this type of community service, please contact the City Manager’s office at 419-933-2591 for more details.
BRUSH & COMPOST
The compost area is now open during our normal business hours, Monday through Friday, 7 am to 5 pm. Please call the Maintenance Department at 419-933-7531 with any questions. This will be for City residents only. No commercial dumping. Branches, leaves, and grass are accepted. With current EPA regulations, we cannot accept any food items (pumpkins, apples, pears, or any kind of food waste).
TREES
The City of Willard is pro-active when it comes to trees. We are very proud of the fact that we have been named a Tree City for 42 years!
Trees located between the street and sidewalk are City trees. If you have a concern about a tree, please contact the Maintenance Department and we will inspect the tree and take appropriate action. We work with the ODNR to determine hazardous trees that need to be removed.
When funds permit, we also do a fall tree planting. The City offers trees to residents for planting in the tree lawn. Selection and variety of the tree is to be determined by the City. A nursery will be hired to plant the tree in your boulevard. Thereafter, you will be required to maintain proper care of the tree. You may also contact the Maintenance Department to be placed on a list for future consideration.
